5 common social media mistakes

As more and more businesses are becoming comfortable with using social media it is important to learn from others mistakes. Here are 5 common mistakes that businesses seem to make over and over again.

Following any man and his dog:  Although social media is all about being social, it is not about following and befriending anybody and everybody just to have the numbers. As with all other things in life, it’s about the quality of the relationships you built online and just because you have thousands of friends it doesn’t mean that your network is of any use.

Sign up for it all: One of the key things to consider before you start signing up for every possible social media website is that (as with all other marketing tools) you need to have a strategy for your social media. To build an effective network and community it is of vital importance that you first determine which platform would suit your company and organization best. It’s best to start out with one presence and focus to get this right than to spend your time on as many as possible sites and in the end you have little to show for your efforts.

Losing interest: Social Media is a constant flow of interactions. It is easy to start but it can soon become a challenge to keep going. To really be effective and see return on your efforts you need to know that this will require a long term commitment. People will soon notice if you have outdated updates on your site or haven’t engaged in a while and this can cause even more harm to your brand than not taking part at all.

Think before you speak:  Or in this case think carefully before you hit that publish button. The real-time nature of social media websites means that you can easily get caught up in the excitement and publish content before you think. It is however critical to ensure that what’s being published is accurate, honest and in line with the message the company wants to convey.

Free Marketing:
Although signing up for social media accounts are free, people often forget that it takes time and effort to manage effectively.  Social media will always require somebody's time and may require that certain corporate resources be allocated differently. Businesses can't ignore these costs when planning their social media strategies and evaluating what they're delivering.
